About Scriptor

What is Scriptor? +

Scriptor is premium offline writing software designed for serious authors — novelists, screenwriters, journalists, academics, and anyone who writes for a living. It combines a distraction-free editor with powerful organisational tools like a character database, plot tracker, writing analytics, full-text search, and a research organizer — all in one integrated application. No subscriptions. No cloud. Just you and your craft.

Who is Scriptor for? +

Scriptor is for anyone who writes seriously. Our users include fantasy and sci-fi novelists, literary fiction authors, screenwriters, investigative journalists, academics, PhD candidates, memoirists, and NaNoWriMo participants. If you write more than 10,000 words per month and value focus, privacy, and a fair business model, Scriptor is built for you.

How is Scriptor different from Scrivener, Ulysses, or Word? +

Unlike subscription-based tools like Ulysses (monthly fee) or feature-bloated apps like Word, Scriptor focuses on a clean, integrated writing experience with a one-time price. Unlike Scrivener, Scriptor includes a native character database, visual plot tracking, writing analytics, and full-text search out of the box — features that require plugins or third-party tools elsewhere. Scriptor is fully cross-platform, privacy-first, and includes lifetime updates with no paid upgrades.

Can I import my projects from Scrivener, Word, or Ulysses? +

Yes. Scriptor imports from Scrivener (.scrivx), Word (.docx), plain text (.txt), and Markdown (.md). Scrivener imports preserve your chapter structure, synopses, notes, and scene status. Word imports retain formatting. For Ulysses, export your sheets as Markdown and import them directly. Your work is never locked in — and once inside Scriptor, it stays in open, accessible formats.

Pricing & Licensing

How does the one-time payment work? +

You pay €399 once. That is the complete price for the full application with all features included. There are no monthly or annual subscription fees, no in-app purchases, no upsells, no "Pro" tier, and no hidden costs. You get the complete application, lifetime updates, and full support. Scriptor is built on the belief that writing tools should be owned, not rented.

What justifies the €399 price tag? +

Over a five-year period, subscription writing tools cost between €600 and €1,200. Scrivener at $60 lacks a character database, visual plot tracking, and analytics — you need separate tools that add cost. Atticus at $297 is cloud-only with no offline mode. Scriptor at €399 includes everything: full-featured editor, character database, plot tracker, analytics, research organizer, all export formats, lifetime updates, cross-platform support, and absolute privacy. Over a decade of writing, it is the most cost-effective premium tool available.

What does "lifetime updates" mean? +

Every future version of Scriptor is included in your purchase. When we release version 2.0, 3.0, new features, performance improvements, or bug fixes — you get them all at no additional cost. We do not sell paid upgrades, version-2-as-a-new-product, or feature-gated releases. Buy once, get everything, forever. The license is perpetual and never expires.

Can I use Scriptor on multiple devices? +

Yes. Your license covers all your personal devices — Windows, macOS, and Linux. Install it on your desktop, laptop, or both without any additional fees or activation limits. Because Scriptor is local-only, you transfer project files between devices manually or via a sync service of your choice. There is no artificial device cap or license server check-in.

Do you offer student or education discounts? +

Yes. Students, educators, and academic institutions receive a 30% discount on the full license. Use your academic email (.edu, .ac.uk, or equivalent) when contacting us, and we will provide a discount code. We believe cost should never be a barrier to good writing tools. The discount applies to the full one-time license.

Do you offer team or site licenses? +

Yes. For writing groups, workshops, educational institutions, and organisations, we offer volume licensing at reduced rates. Whether you need 5 licenses or 50, we can put together a custom quote. Contact us with your requirements, and we will respond within 24 hours with a tailored proposal. The per-seat cost decreases with volume.

Do you offer payment plans or installments? +

Not at this time. We believe in a clean, honest transaction — you pay once, you own it forever. If the one-time payment is a concern, we strongly recommend using the 14-day free trial to evaluate Scriptor fully before purchasing. The trial includes every feature with no limitations and no credit card required.

What payment methods do you accept? +

We accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, PayPal, SEPA bank transfers, and Apple Pay. All payments are processed securely through Stripe. Your payment details never touch our servers. For business purchases, we can issue invoices and accept bank transfers — contact us for details.

Is there a free trial? +

Yes. Scriptor offers a 14-day full-access free trial. No credit card required, no commitment. You get access to every feature from day one — character database, plot tracker, analytics, all export formats. Download, install, and start writing. If you decide Scriptor is not for you, simply let the trial expire with no charge and no obligation.

How does the 14-day guarantee work? +

If you purchase Scriptor and decide within the first 14 days that it is not right for you, we will refund your payment in full — no questions asked. Simply contact our support team and we process the refund within 48 hours. Combined with the free trial, you have a full month to evaluate Scriptor before making a final commitment.

Offline, Privacy & Data

Does Scriptor require an internet connection? +

No. Scriptor works entirely offline. There is no cloud dependency, no account registration, no telemetry, and no data collection. You download the installer once, run it, and start writing. If you use it on a machine that never connects to the internet, it works just the same. Writing offline is not a feature in Scriptor — it is the foundation.

Is my data stored in the cloud? +

Absolutely not. Scriptor stores everything locally on your machine. We do not sync to any cloud service, we do not store copies on our servers, and we do not have access to your writing. There is no "save to cloud" button, no cloud account to set up, no sync folder. Your manuscript lives on your hard drive, under your control. If you want to back it up to a cloud service, that is your choice, not ours.

How do I transfer projects between devices without cloud sync? +

Scriptor projects are standard folders on your drive. To move between devices, copy the project folder to a USB drive, external SSD, or your preferred sync service (Dropbox, OneDrive, Google Drive). On your other device, use File > Open Project and select the copied folder. Your project files are cross-platform compatible between Windows, macOS, and Linux. Important: never open the same project on two devices simultaneously to avoid conflicts.

What happens if my hard drive fails? +

Scriptor auto-saves every 60 seconds and keeps local version history for each scene. Because your project is a regular folder on disk, any backup tool works seamlessly — Time Machine, Backblaze, rsync, or simply copying the folder to an external drive. We recommend storing your project folder inside a synced directory (Dropbox, OneDrive) for automatic off-site backup. Your data is never locked inside a proprietary database.

Does Scriptor auto-save? Can I recover from a crash? +

Yes, Scriptor auto-saves every 60 seconds. If the application crashes, reopen it and your last auto-save is restored automatically. Additionally, Scriptor maintains version snapshots for every scene, accessible via the version history panel. You can view, compare, and restore any previous snapshot at any time. Accidental deletions and unwanted changes are never permanent.

What data does Scriptor collect? Are you GDPR compliant? +

Scriptor collects absolutely no telemetry, no usage data, no analytics, and no writing data at all. The only information we ever have access to is your email address if you contact support or make a purchase. We are fully GDPR compliant. Your manuscript never leaves your machine — there are simply no servers to send it to. Scriptor is not a SaaS product; it is software you own.

If Scriptor goes out of business, will my software stop working? +

No. Scriptor does not require an activation server, phone-home check, or online license verification after the initial purchase. Once installed and licensed, it works indefinitely — even if our company ceases to exist. Your license is perpetual and fully offline. We also provide offline installer archives to all customers as an additional precaution. Your writing is never held hostage by our corporate fate.

Key Features

What is the character database? How detailed can profiles be? +

The character database stores detailed profiles for every character in your story. Each entry supports: name, alias, age, physical description, personality traits, backstory, motivation, arc type (protagonist, antagonist, side, mentor), relationships to other characters, custom tags, and custom fields you define yourself. You can attach reference images and link characters to specific scenes. The database handles hundreds of characters without performance degradation.

Can I link characters to scenes and track their arcs? +

Yes. Each scene in Scriptor can tag which characters appear in it. After linking, you can run a reverse lookup that shows every scene a specific character appears in — across your entire manuscript. This is invaluable for tracking character arcs, ensuring consistent voice, and spotting continuity issues. Combined with the plot tracker, you can see at a glance how each character's journey unfolds through the story.

Does Scriptor have a plot tracker? How does it work? +

Yes. The plot tracker gives you a visual timeline of your story's structure. Organize scenes on a timeline, color-code by plot thread or POV character, mark scenes as flashback or flash-forward, and drag-and-drop to restructure. Multiple subplots and POVs are fully supported with independent color coding. The plot map reveals where tension builds, where pacing needs work, and how your story threads interconnect.

Can I export my plot map or character database? +

Yes. The plot timeline can be exported as a high-resolution image suitable for pitch documents, submission packets, and author websites. The character database can be exported as a structured report in PDF or Markdown format — ideal for sharing with beta readers, editors, or co-authors. You can also export your entire project as a single comprehensive PDF including manuscript, characters, and research notes.

What formats can I export to? +

Scriptor supports export to DOCX, PDF, EPUB, Markdown, TXT, and HTML. All exports preserve your formatting. EPUB files pass epubcheck validation and are accepted by Apple Books, Kobo, and Google Play. PDF exports include customisable page layouts, headers, page numbers, and font embedding — ready for print-on-demand platforms like KDP. Your work is never locked into a proprietary format.

Can I create a print-ready book interior inside Scriptor? +

Yes. Scriptor's PDF export includes customisable page settings: trim size (6x9, 5.5x8.5, A5, and custom), margins, headers, page numbers, and font embedding. The output is ready for KDP print, IngramSpark, and other print-on-demand platforms. For complex interiors (drop caps, decorative breaks, custom chapter openers), you can export DOCX and refine in Word or Atticus — but for most books, Scriptor's PDF is production-ready.

Does Scriptor have spell check and grammar check? +

Scriptor includes a built-in spell checker with support for English, German, French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Dutch. For advanced grammar checking, style analysis, and readability scoring, export to DOCX and use your preferred external tool (ProWritingAid, Grammarly, LanguageTool). Your local files are standard formats that work with any editing tool — there is no lock-in.

Can I set daily word count goals and track my progress? +

Absolutely. Scriptor's writing analytics let you set daily, weekly, and project-level word goals. Track your progress with live word counts, session duration, writing streaks, and visual productivity charts. See your most productive hours, average words per session, and estimated project completion dates. The analytics are designed to motivate, not distract — all data stays local, private, and under your control.

Does Scriptor have a distraction-free typewriter mode? +

Yes. Scriptor's full-screen typewriter mode locks the cursor in the center of the screen as you write. Forward-only momentum keeps you moving — no backspace, no editing, just pure output. Combined with dark mode, custom fonts (including dyslexic-friendly options), and adjustable line spacing, you can craft the perfect writing atmosphere. No notifications, no toolbars, nothing between you and the page.

Technical & Support

What platforms does Scriptor support? +

Scriptor runs natively on Windows 10 and 11, macOS 11 Big Sur and later (including native Apple Silicon M1 through M4 — no Rosetta 2 needed), and Linux (major distributions via AppImage and .deb packages). The same license works on all three platforms. Your project files are fully cross-platform and can be moved between operating systems without conversion.

What are the system requirements? +

Minimum requirements: 4 GB RAM, 500 MB free disk space, 1280x800 display resolution. Recommended: 8 GB RAM for large manuscripts with 200+ characters and extensive research notes. Scriptor is a native application — not Electron-based — so it is fast, memory-efficient, and responsive even on older hardware. The Linux version supports both x86_64 and ARM64 architectures.

Can Scriptor handle a very large manuscript? +

Yes. Scriptor handles manuscripts of 500,000+ words with hundreds of characters and extensive research notes without slowdown. The full-text search indexes your entire project and returns results in milliseconds. Because Scriptor is a native application (not a web wrapper), it uses your system's resources efficiently and does not degrade with project size. We have users writing epic fantasy series with over a million words in a single project.

Does Scriptor support multiple monitors? +

Yes. Scriptor works seamlessly with multi-monitor setups. Keep your manuscript editor on one screen and your research organizer, character database, or plot tracker on the other. Panels can be undocked and moved between displays freely. This is especially useful for writers who want reference material visible while they write without losing focus on the main editor.

How often do you release updates? Is there a changelog? +

We release minor updates and bug fixes every 4–6 weeks and major feature releases 2–3 times per year. A full public changelog is available on our website and within the application. Every update is free — no paid upgrades ever. You choose when to update; older versions continue working indefinitely. Updates are delivered as native installers, not forced through an auto-updater.

Does Scriptor work on Chromebook or Raspberry Pi? +

If your Chromebook supports Linux apps (Linux container), you can install the Linux version of Scriptor and it runs well on modern Chromebook hardware with 8 GB RAM or more. For Raspberry Pi 5 and similar ARM64 Linux devices, the ARM64 build is available. Performance depends on the device, but for focused writing and light project management, it works. Windows on ARM devices are also supported via the standard Windows installer.

How do I get support? +

Email us at support@writescriptor.com and we respond within 24 hours — usually much faster. Whether you have a technical issue, a pre-sales question, or a feature request, we read every message personally. Scriptor does not have a chatbot, ticket system, or outsourced support team. When you contact us, you are talking to the people who built the software.
